Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ) released an official statement today on the Democrats' "None-of-the-Above" energy bill:
"The Democrats have presented a bill that masquerades as an energy plan, but in reality, it's no more than a farce. Their no-energy plan' provides NO solutions to ease the burden of high energy prices on American families. In addition, there are billions of dollars of tax increases in the bill, $14 billion, to be exact. Apparently, the high prices of energy are not enough of a strain on taxpayer's pocketbooks; the Democrats want to further hurt families by raising taxes. New Jerseyans are already afflicted with an above-average cost of living, causing thousands residents to flee the state last year alone. This legislation will only further exacerbate the situation.
"The Democrats' proposed legislation would restrict exploration of at least 80 percent of the Outer Continental Shelf. In fact, this bill would make it easier for China to drill off of our coast than for America to explore and increase our own homegrown sources.
"What this bill does NOT include, however, is any reform to prevent further litigation designed to halt efforts in energy exploration and development. It does NOT allow energy exploration or development in Alaska. It does NOT allow for expedited petroleum refinery permitting. And it does NOT allow for expedited nuclear reactor permitting. In short, this bill does NOT accomplish anything.
"I have and will continue to support an energy policy that will move America away from foreign sources of energy, and promote conservation, alternative fuels, and deep-sea exploration. The legislation offered by the Democrats will NOT accomplish any of these objectives."
