Lou Barletta's statement on the rejection of the I-80 tolling scheme

Hazleton Mayor Lou Barletta released the following statement when he learned that efforts to stop the tolling of Interstate 80 had been successful:

"As mayor of Hazleton and a member of the Alliance to Stop I-80 Tolling, I am very pleased to learn that the Secretary of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration have decided against the tolling of Interstate 80.

"The effects of tolls on I-80 would have been terrible for Hazleton and the surrounding area. The businesses, consumers and visitors to the area all would have suffered as a result.

"Over the past year, I have contacted federal and state leaders and urged them not to toll I-80. I have led and attended press conferences and rallies opposing the tolling of I-80. It is gratifying to know that in this case the voices of the people were heard and the will of the public outweighed the desire of some politicians."
