Long Thompson: Health Care Costs Rising Faster in Indiana New Study Finds

Statement

Date: Sept. 23, 2008
Location: Indianapolis, IN

Today Jill Long Thompson, the Democratic nominee for Governor, released the following statement in response to a Families USA study, which was released today showing the cost of health care in Indiana increasing faster than wages.

"Over the course of the last two years, nearly two million Hoosiers have gone without health insurance for some period of time. At the same time, as the cost continues to rise, fewer employers are able to offer their employees health care coverage. The cost of health care is crippling our economy and hurting the bottom lines of too many of our families and businesses.

While the current administration has sat by and done little to address this problem, as Governor I will make lowering the cost of health care a top priority. I have proposed a plan to create health insurance purchasing pools to allow individuals and small businesses to join together to buy insurance in bulk at dramatically reduced costs. This is a cost effective and quick way to make health care more affordable and accessible for Indiana's families and businesses - and with the right leadership we can make it a reality."
