GOVERNOR NAPOLITANO LAUNCHES TUCSON VALUES TEACHERS
Education Partnership to Attract and Retain the Best Teachers
Governor Napolitano today kicked off Tucson Values Teachers, a community campaign in southern Arizona dedicated to attracting, supporting, and retaining high quality teachers to improve K-12 education.
Tucson Values Teachers, a partnership among the region's government, business and education communities, aims to raise awareness of the importance of quality education, enhance the standing of the teaching profession and attract, support and retain the very best teachers for every public school classroom.
The campaign's efforts will include math and science internships for teachers; continuing education for K-12 teachers; and substantial incentives to teachers including classroom supplies and equipment. Additionally, a public relations campaign will highlight Arizona's teachers and promote Arizona as a great place to teach.
"Education is Arizona's most important long-term priority. Aside from parents, teachers are the top indicator of student success," said Governor Napolitano. "Community-driven programs such as Tucson Values Teachers help ensure that Arizona's children are given the opportunity to learn from the most well-trained, best-prepared teachers in the nation."
Tucson Values Teachers dovetails with key steps the state has taken to improve Arizona's education system, including the recent launch of the Arizona STEM Education Center, which promotes science, technology, engineering and math education; the Arizona State Board of Education's new high school graduation requirements; and the Governor's P-20 Council, which launched in 2005 to align Arizona's education system with the expectations of 21st century employers.
As part of today's launch, the Governor also announced a $40,000 grant from the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona to support an alliance between the P-20 Council and Literacy for Life Coalition for Southern Arizona. The grant will further funding for the Governor's Teacher Reading Endorsement Scholarship program, which provides professional development and continuing education scholarships to Arizona teachers.
