Statement of Senator Barack Obama on the Senate's Passage of the Emmett Till Bill

U.S. Senator Barack Obama today released the following statement after the Senate passed the Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crimes Act:

"I am proud the Senate finally passed this bipartisan legislation, which honors the life of Chicago's Emmett Till by providing the Justice Department with the tools it needs to investigate and prosecute unsolved civil rights crimes.

"Emmett Till's violent murder is just one of many tragic crimes that occurred decades ago and never was solved. Resolving these crimes must be a priority, so that those guilty of crimes are punished and our nation's commitment to justice for all is honored. We must continue doing everything we can to ensure Justice Department officials, as well as state and local authorities, have the resources they need to hold those accountable for the most egregious crimes."
