U.S. Representative Tom Allen, a senior member of the House Budget Committee, issued the statement below concerning the inclusion of full funding for the new Waterfront Support Facility at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. The House today passed the Fiscal Year (FY) 2009 Continuing Resolution to fund all government spending through March of 2009 including $22.1 million for the facility, also known as Dry Dock #3 and $9.9 million to consolidate and modernize outdated warehouse facilities.
"This $22.1 million appropriation is great news for the men and women whose skill and efficiency make PNSY the nation's premier public shipyard. The new Dry Dock #3 will give shipbuilders a much-needed modern facility for their work maintaining and refueling the nuclear submarines vital to our nation's security, including the new Virginia class beginning in 2010. The agreement to include an additional $9.9 million for a more efficient warehouse at PNSY with automated material handling is a victory for House conferees, since the Senate had not originally funded this provision. I was proud to work with the other members of the Maine and New Hampshire congressional delegations to secure these funds."
