Representative Courtney Responds to President's Acceptance of a "Time Horizon" in Iraq

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Joe Courtney issued the following statement in response to the White House's announcement of its willingness to accept a "time horizon" for withdrawal of U.S. troops in discussions with the Iraqi government and military leaders.

"President George Bush has finally recognized what the American people have known for a long time - it is time to responsibly end the war in Iraq with a timetable for the redeployment of U.S. troops. This change of direction will give our military personnel and their families the break they deserve and stop the reckless spending of $12 billion a month of borrowed money in Iraq."

"As I and other House Armed Services Committee members have been saying for the last eighteen months, we need to refocus our efforts on the real threat to American national security in Afghanistan and the border area of Pakistan. Such an effort can only take place with a drawdown of American troops in Iraq, which until now, the Administration has refused to acknowledge."
