ALLARD COMMENTS ON MMS SCANDAL
Inspector General Report Raises Serious Allegations of Misconduct
U.S. Sen. Wayne Allard (R-Colo.), Ranking Member of the Senate Interior Appropriations Subcommittee, made the following statement today in regard to a report released yesterday by the U.S. Dept. of the Interior Inspector General Earl E. Devaney containing allegations about misconduct by employees at the royalty-in-kind program of Interior's Minerals Management Service.
"The culture of ethical failures outlined in the Inspector General's report is shocking and clearly unacceptable," said Allard. "I expect steps to be taken to ensure that the illegal activities and appalling misconduct of several former and current employees in the Minerals Management Service's Royalty in Kind program never happen again. The actions of these rogue employees cast a shadow over an otherwise honorable agency. Firm disciplinary actions must be taken to correct these unacceptable practices and I look forward to hearing the progress on these actions."
"As Ranking Member of the Interior Appropriations Subcommittee I will certainly be discussing this report with the Inspector General and the Secretary of the Interior and pushing to ensure that responsible individuals are dealt with appropriately," added Allard. "The recommendations outlined by the OIG report should be a first step in ensuring that this gross misconduct never happens again."
