News-Press - "Libertarian hopeful pays a visit"

The man is running for Congress, so he came to St. Joseph to speak to Libertarians at Hyde Park on Sunday evening.

Dave Browning, the Libertarian candidate for Missouri's 6th District Congressional seat, said he knows in his heart that America is in trouble because the country is ignoring the experience of the Founding Fathers. Even though he's been a practicing attorney for 32 years, Mr. Browning told a gathering of 10 people that the country needs to follow four simple rules: non-intervention, free trade, stable currency and limited government.

"If government can't have fiat currency, then they can't control your life," Mr. Browning said. Fiat currency is like Monopoly dollars in that it is only money because the rules say so, he said.

Larry Flinchpaugh, an active Ron Paul supporter, asked Mr. Browning what he thought of executive orders, which he described as Congress giving the president legislative powers because they are too lazy to do their job.

In response to another inquiry from Mr. Flinchpaugh, Mr. Browning said he favored a federal law similar to Missouri's that would require new legislation to have a single subject.

Another problem is people working to get a third-party candidate elected and then ignoring them while they're in office, said Mike Bozarth, a city councilman, Libertarian and publisher of the St. Joseph Telegraph.

Mr. Browning, a former Jackson County assistant prosecuting attorney, has filed a complaint against the News-Press with the Federal Election Commission, alleging unfair exclusion in a gathering where the News-Press questioned Rep. Sam Graves, R-Tarkio, and Kay Barnes, the Democratic candidate.
