John Barrow is a strong advocate for local control and federal support of public education. A proud product of Georgia's public schools and the University of Georgia, Congressman Barrow knows that a strong public education system is the key to opportunity - not only for individuals but for our communities.

Throughout his fist year in Congress, John served on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce where he fought to increase support for students, teachers, public schools, and colleges throughout all our communities. He helped create new funding opportunities for early college high schools - programs that help at-risk and low income students finish high school and prepare for college, and he opposed cuts to student aid programs, voting against a $15 billion raid on the student aid program.

Last summer, John hosted an "Education and Jobs Tour," visiting all of the technical colleges that serve the 12th District. At each stop he listened as college administrators and teachers discussed the challenges they face and the tools they need to continue providing critical job training and workforce development skills essential in meeting the needs of our communities and our local businesses.

Congressman Barrow remembers when American workers could support their families by building high quality products for export all over the world. Today, it seems as though our biggest exports - nationally and locally - are our jobs.

In the House of Representatives, Congressman Barrow put the needs of working families ahead of the special interests - voting against unfair trade policies like the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), fighting to create new incentives for businesses to hire more workers and provide quality, affordable heath care for their employees, and leading the effort to force a fair up or down vote on raising the minimum wage.

As our Congressman, John has never forgotten our rural communities. He has worked for new initiatives to support family farmers in Georgia - like expanding markets for bio-diesel based fuels, working to support efforts to provide added value to agricultural products, and fighting to ensure that new educational and economic opportunities don't bypass rural Georgia.
