Hagel to Travel to Central and South America
Includes Stop at U.S. Southern Command in Florida

U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE) will travel to Panama, Colombia and Brazil August 27 through September 3. Hagel will meet with host government, U.S., business, and non-government leaders to discuss a full range of issues. Hagel will also visit the United States military's Southern Command in Miami, FL to discuss regional military, security and counternarcotics policies.

"The United States' relations with our Western Hemisphere neighbors should be a top-tier foreign policy priority. The U.S. will continue to be affected by energy, security, stability, trade and economic developments in Central and South America. At a time when U.S. resources are stretched dangerously thin across the globe, it is important that we focus on our relationships with allies close to home.

"We must continue to work together on issues of common interest, including the Colombia and Panama Free Trade Agreements, expanded energy, trade and economic cooperation, counternarcotics and immigration. We must also address the underlying realities of the human condition in order to strengthen regional stability. I look forward to discussing these and other common interests with each country's civilian and military leaders," Hagel said.
