U.S. Representative Tom Allen today issued the statement below following House passage of the Paycheck Fairness Act, legislation he cosponsored.

"At the heart of the Paycheck Fairness Act is the notion that women deserve equal pay for equal work. I am proud to have cosponsored this bill and believe that enacting this into law will be a major milestone in the movement to bring full equality to the workplace. Recently, I introduced legislation aimed at helping women in the workplace and in retirement, the Women's Retirement Security Act of 2008 (H.R. 5543). More often than men, women work at part time jobs that do not offer a retirement plan, or work from home and face similar disadvantages. The legislation I have introduced will help level the playing field for women in retirement and ensure that fewer Americans will live in poverty during their golden years. Women have worked hard for decades to achieve greater equality in the workplace, and Congress should ensure that comfortable retirement is within reach for all Americans, regardless of gender."
