President Bush Responds to Congressman Pearce's Request for Federal Disaster Declaration

Today, Congressman Pearce applauded President Bush after the President issued a federal disaster declaration over the New Mexico counties of Lincoln and Otero. This is in direct response to the recent flood which devastated the area. Federal assistance will now be available to both counties which were hit hard by Hurricane Dolly.

As a result of this declaration Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will offer Public Assistance to both counties affected, and Hazard Mitigation Assistance to Lincoln County. With this aid, state and local governments will be able to make repairs to damaged property or replace it entirely. A few select non-profit organizations will also be eligible to receive similar support. This declaration does not include benefits for Individual Assistance. Home, business, and personal economic damages will not be recoverable.

"While I am pleased that the disaster declaration will aid in cleaning up streets, repairing roads and bridges, and clearing any remaining natural hazards, I remain concerned that FEMA has denied the request for Individual Assistance. The disaster declaration will not end the problems of the people and will not help them restore their homes and property to pre-flood conditions." Pearce stated, "I will continue working with the victims of this flood, to help ensure they obtain all the relief they need. I am also requesting that FEMA reconsider its denial of Individual Assistance."
