Issue Position: A Rational Plan for Immigration
I strongly oppose the irrational and racist Sensenbrenner Bill and I am fighting for a humane immigration policy that does not criminalize those who seek to participate in our society and become Americans, as generations of immigrants have throughout our nation's history. Legislation currently being considered that will drive the undocumented further underground by increasing the threat of arrest and deportation also threatens our national security, our public health, and the fabric of our communities.
We are better able to manage all the issues raised by the presence of new and future Americans by establishing a mechanism that facilitates their inclusion in our institutions and government. We should provide an inclusive system for documentation, which will allow us to a) identify security threats without profiling, b) assist our local police, education and healthcare systems by encouraging participation, and c) allow us to better address unscrupulous employers who are able to lower wages and safety standards for everyone because of the existance of a hidden' workforce.
