Issues: Immigration

With the rise of the illegal immigrant population in the United States over the last decade, action must be taken to protect the safety and well-being of U.S. residents by securing our nation's borders. That is why I was pleased to support the Secure Fence Act of 2006, P.L. 109-367. This law enhances border security through increased personnel and technology, such as sensors and cameras.

While strengthening our nation's border is a top priority, a broader approach to tackling immigration is needed. We must ensure that our employers are following the law, hiring legal workers, and paying decent wages. At the same time, our employers need to have the tools available to make sure they are in compliance with the law. If a dairy farmer in western Wisconsin hires someone to help with milking, they should be able to check the employee's documentation and be confident that they aren't breaking any laws.

Further, as a nation founded and built by immigrants, we have a proud history of reaching out to foreigners and offering refuge and opportunity to those who seek it. Therefore, I support comprehensive reform that not only bolsters enforcement of immigration laws but also provides a practical solution for the 12 million undocumented immigrants residing within our borders.
