Illegal immigration has been on the rise in the United States over the last decade, and is one of the greatest challenges we face as a nation. This is not merely a legal issue; this is an economic issue, a safety issue, and an ethical issue.
Strengthening our nation's border should be our top priority. That is why I supported the Secure Fence Act; a law that enhances border security though increased personnel and technology - such as sensors and cameras.
We must also ensure that our employers are following the law, hiring legal workers, and paying decent wages. At the same time, I recognize that there are workforce needs, particularly in agriculture, that have historically relied on migrant labor. Our employers need to have tools available to make sure they can meet their workforce needs while in compliance with the law.
As a nation founded and built by immigrants, we have a proud history of reaching out and offering refuge and opportunity to those who seek it. Therefore, I support comprehensive reform that secures our borders, bolsters enforcement of immigration laws, and provides a practical solution for the 12 million undocumented immigrants residing within our borders.
