As a mini-van driver, I too feel the pain of high gas prices which continue to rise daily. For the first time in history, the price of gas has surpassed $4 per gallon. I am actively working with my colleagues in the House of Representatives to set our nation on a new path towards energy independence and security. A new energy plan is desperately needed and the time to act is now.
America desperately needs a comprehensive energy policy that will reduce our reliance on fossil fuels generally and foreign oil in particular. As we begin this work, we must also heed the heavy ecological price we are paying by continuing to consume huge quantities of fossil fuels. Scientists have made clear that if we do not curb, and ultimately dramatically reduce our carbon emissions, the effects of climate change will cause unprecedented national security threats for our country.
Many Americans are now calling for Congress to allow drilling off the coast of Florida and in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). While I share the urgency to end our continued dependency on foreign oil, drilling in these two areas will not solve our country's energy crisis.
Congress must be willing to explore alternatives to fossil fuels. I am strongly committed to working with the House leadership to reform our nations' energy policy by increasing domestic production of renewable energy sources, moving us towards energy independence, and helping to decrease the cost of living for Americans.
