Within the last several months, Americans have been feeling the repercussions of a slowing economy. Florida's foreclosure rates are the third highest of any state in the nation while Fort Lauderdale's foreclosure rates rank tenth for all metropolitan areas in the nation. Today, nearly 7.7 million able-bodied Americans are without jobs and during 2007, Florida's unemployment rate rose by 1%, putting 90,000 people out of work. America needs a New Direction.
I am committed to finding a comprehensive long-term economic program to stabilize and enhance our economy. Lower health care costs, tax fairness, restoration of confidence in consumer goods, and improvements in our nation's infrastructure are a few of the many long-term goals of House Democrats.
Additionally, as a member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government, I will continue to provide the needed oversight of government agencies that have major influence on economic issues such as the Department of the Treasury, the Internal Revenue Services, and the Small Business Administration.
