I am proud to represent the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, our nation's second largest marine sanctuary. The National Marine Sanctuaries are a system of 13 sanctuaries and one coral reef ecosystem reserve.
These sites help to protect countless species of marine wildlife, promote scientific research, manage resources, and foster our important maritime cultural legacy.
I dove to NOAA's Aquarius Underwater Laboratory for a first-hand look at the sanctuary in our own backyard, have sponsored many briefings to educate others on the importance of National Marine Sanctuaries and worked to elevate the Marine Sanctuaries program to office status. I recently organized a forum on Capitol Hill to share my experience on the Aquarius dive and to inform others of the importance of our National Marine Sanctuary in the Florida Keys.
It is imperative that we keep these precious treasures pristine for future generations.
