Cubin Sends Letter Encouraging Pelosi to Allow Votes on the Floor to Increase the Supply of American Energy
Congresswoman Cubin (R-WY) signed a letter with 70 of her colleagues urging Speaker Pelosi to bring a number of crucial bills to reduce energy costs to the floor of the House of Representatives for a vote. The members wrote this letter to Pelosi in response to her letter to President Bush urging that he open the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR).
By writing this letter, Pelosi acknowledges that increasing the supply of oil on the market will help decrease the cost of energy. It's worth noting that many economists have stated that releasing a "small portion" of the SPR would not noticeably affect world oil markets nor would it significantly diminish the price of a gallon of gas. On the other hand, if America could begin tapping into our own vast, domestic resources there would be a significant decrease in the price we pay for energy. A number of Republican proposals seek to do just that, but Democrats are not bringing these bills to the floor for a vote.
"If the Democrat leadership is serious about reducing our high energy costs, they will allow our bills to the floor for a healthy debate and vote. We have crafted the legislation and have the solutions, but Speaker Pelosi has to allow a vote on our measures to increase domestic energy production. This is the People's House and I want to see Mrs. Pelosi do what's right for the American people, and that is allowing a vote on these bills," Representative Cubin commented.
Representative Cubin's letter sent to Speaker Pelosi is attached to this release.
