The Murphy Report

Dear Friend,

Easing the Burden on Middle Class Families

Welcome back to the Murphy Report! In this edition you will find an update on my efforts on behalf of families like yours in this troubled economy. From home foreclosures to record gas prices, many in our community are hurting. We need to continue to work together to solve the problems we face. Please take the time to read through this email update and sign up to receive others like it. Also, don't forget to take the survey!

Critically-Timed Property Tax Relief for Families

Recently, I was proud to work quickly and in a bipartisan way to provide a much-needed boost to families across our community. In addition to the Bipartisan Economic Stimulus Package, which is already sending hundreds of dollars in Recovery Rebates to families across America, I also supported critical measures to help with home foreclosures and provide some critically-timed property tax relief. The property tax cut, if enacted, means that those who own a home and take a standard deduction can deduct an additional $350 per individual and $700 per joint filer on state and local property taxes. Smart Solutions for Our Energy Future

Gas prices are soaring and families need a break. Recently, I proudly voted with Democrats and Republicans in Congress to temporarily suspend filling the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR). Filling the SPR takes 70,000 barrels of oil off the market each day and a suspension could reduce gas prices up to 24 cents per gallon. Right now, the SPR is roughly 97 percent full - the highest level ever - with enough oil to meet our national security needs. In 2000, after similar action, the price of oil dropped by one-third. Hopefully this measure, when combined with some long-term solutions to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, will help secure our energy future and lower the price of gas.
