First Event of 2008 Healthy SC / Family Fitness Challenge Announced
FLOPPIN FLOUNDER 5K TO SERVE AS
KICKOFF TO THIS YEAR CHALLENGE
Gov. Mark Sanford today announced his family's participation in the upcoming 17th Annual Floppin' Flounder 5K. The event, sponsored by the Sullivan's Island Fire and Rescue Department, will kick off the First Family's Family Fitness Challenge, an annual series of events aimed at improving the health of South Carolinians by raising awareness of health and encouraging healthier decisions in their day-to-day lives. Each year, the family participates in or hosts a number of fitness events, with this year's kickoff being the 5K on Sullivan's Island to be held on June 14.
"This event is an opportunity for every South Carolinian to get a little bit more active, whether you run or walk the 5K," Gov. Sanford said. "A big part of quality of life in our state goes back to how healthy we are as individual South Carolinians, and the fact is that too many of us don't get enough exercise and eat the wrong things, leading to our state being near the top of the list for a whole host of health problems due to unhealthy lifestyles. To that end, I'd invite all South Carolinians to come join with me and the boys and take steps together toward a healthier state."
The Family Fitness Challenge is part of a larger initiative, the Healthy SC Challenge, a results-oriented initiative aimed at motivating South Carolinians to start making choices to improve health and well-being.
