Issue Position: Transportation

As our roads and bridges continue to age, investing in our nation's transportation infrastructure is essential. Making significant infrastructural improvements will create jobs, help America stay economically competitive, reduce oil consumption, and reduce the economic and environmental impacts of traffic congestion.

In Congress I will be the only member of the House Transportation Committee who has personally managed a state department of transportation, and my experience will help make sure Minnesota benefits from new developments in federal transportation policy. I will work with the Transportation Committee to address the needs of Minnesota businesses and communities and ensure safe, efficient travel.

* I will help ensure the safety of our roads, bridges and interchanges through timely maintenance and improvements. Well-planned improvements to a balanced transportation system are necessary investments in the economic future of the state and region, and will help Minnesota capture the 80% federal matching funds currently available.

* I will work to decrease commute times in our district through highway improvements, additional Park-and-Ride facilities, and expanded public transportation options.

* I will work to expand the Hiawatha and Central Corridor light rail lines, complete the NorthStar and Red Rock commuter rails, and improve local and express bus services.
