Celebrating 232 Years Of Democracy And Remembering Our Founding Fathers

This Friday, July 4th will mark the 232nd birthday of America as a sovereign nation. The Declaration of Independence was not authored spontaneously, but was the result of years of debate among delegates from the original colonies as to whether they should declare their independence from Great Britain and govern themselves.

Our Founding Fathers knew the consequences and the tremendous challenges they faced. They had envisioned a brighter future, the "Great Experiment" of democracy. Thomas Jefferson had said looking toward the possibilities of success, "I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past." John Adams believed that establishing independence from Britain would allow for a greater pursuit of happiness, even at his own expense. He noted, "I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy."

And so, the fight for independence began, in which modest farmers, merchants and tradesman took up arms against the greatest empire the world had seen since the Roman Empire. John Adams stated, "Our obligations to our country never cease but with our lives." It was with this fortitude and resolve that the colonists fought against all odds and defeated the British, creating a new beginning for a new nation. From that day forward, America set its own course to become the free nation that it is today, continuing for 232 years to give its citizens the right to a free press, free speech, the right to worship whatever God they choose, and the ability to prosper through their own hard work.

America has prospered and grown to be the world's greatest nation. Americans are liberators, protectors of freedom, and the opportunities in this country are endless. As we celebrate this great day and the birthday of our nation, let us remember those brave Founding Fathers who concluded the Declaration of Independence, stating, "And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor." They were willing to give all they had for freedom and the promise of a better future.

So, to all of you, a Happy Independence Day, and to America, Happy 232nd Birthday. As we commemorate this holiday, let us give thanks to all those who sacrificed so much to make this the greatest nation in the world. Let us remember the brave soldiers who have worn the uniform and the current members of the armed services who are fighting abroad against terrorism and violent extremists. We owe them, and their families who sacrifice so much, an enormous debt of gratitude as they continue to protect and defend liberty and freedom. May God bless you, and may God bless the United States of America
