Majority Whip Clyburn and Jim Himes Discuss Economy: Democratic Leader and Candidate Tour District and Highlight Struggles of Working Families
With gas, food, and mortgage costs rising throughout the country, Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-SC) and Democratic Candidate for Congress Jim Himes discussed the state of the economy with voters across the fourth district today.
"Like voters across the country, voters in Connecticut have felt the impact of bad Republican policies," said Rep. Clyburn. "Mortgage rates are going up, it costs more to fill up the tank, and food prices have spiked. The people I met today are worried that rising costs are making it hard to live in an area that's expensive to begin with.
"Democrats in Congress are committed to finding solutions that will deliver results for the middle class. To do this, we need more representatives like Jim Himes. Jim is an American success story. He was raised by a single mother in a small town, he went to a good public school, and he made the most of the opportunities he had. Jim knows that we are at our best when everyone has a chance to make the most of their God-given abilities. I will do all I can to help Jim get elected."
"It is a true honor to have Majority Whip Clyburn join me today," said Himes. "No one knows the importance of opportunity better than Jim Clyburn. Congressman Clyburn grew up in the segregated south, was told he could not be elected to public office, yet was undeterred and rose to become a leader in the United States House of Representatives.
"If elected my highest priority will be making sure that every citizen in our district has a shot at the American Dream. We can do that by making sure we have great schools for our children, healthcare for everyone, and by finally addressing the transportation crisis in this district. I look forward to working with Representative Clyburn to find solutions to these problems in the Congress."
Congressman Clyburn is the highest-ranking African American member of either house of Congress. Jim Himes is the Democratic candidate for Congress in Connecticut's Fourth District.
