Issue Position: Keep Our People Safe
The terrorist attacks on America in 2001 were vicious and evil, and another in a long string of terrorist attacks on Americans around the world over the past 24 years. Beginning with the bombings of the American embassy and Marine barracks in Lebanon in 1983, terrorists have killed innocent Americans with their attacks at the U.S. Embassy in Kuwait in 1983; in the bombing of an American jet over Scotland in 1988; at the World Trade Center in New York in 1993; at U.S. military facilities in Saudi Arabia in 1995 and 1996; at our embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998; and in the bombing of the USS Cole in Yemen in 2000.
And it's not just us the terrorists are attacking. Thousands of other innocent people have suffered unnecessary death and destruction at their hands in Morocco, Indonesia, Kenya, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Turkey, Spain, the United Kingdom, Egypt, and elsewhere.
The world has awakened to the reality of terrorism, and the U.S. is playing a leading role in fighting it. One of the primary responsibilities of the federal government is to defend the American people and our nation's borders, and that would be my commitment to the people of Kansas in Congress.
