Issue Position: Keep the Economy Strong
President Bush worked with the Republican Congress to reduce the tax burden on American families in May 2001 and again following the terrorist attacks on America. This tax relief lowered individual income tax brackets, increased child tax credits, eliminated the marriage penalty, phased in a repeal of the death tax, reduced the capital gains tax, and added tax relief for growing businesses.
This tax relief was common sense and has brought tremendous results. American families and businesses have enjoyed lower taxes, the economy has grown, federal tax revenues have increased dramatically, despite the challenges our country has faced, and the federal deficit is declining.
The Democratic Congress now wants to raise taxes back up, despite the obvious success of the reductions. I would not support increased taxes that would take us back to high death taxes or higher capital gains rates; instead, I would vote to make the tax relief permanent. It's good for the economy and good for Kansas families.
