Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Representative Bud Cramer (Ala.-05) announced today that the House Appropriations Committee this week approved the Fiscal Year 2009 Homeland Security Appropriations Bill.

Representative Cramer, a senior member of the Appropriations Committee, said the bill provides a total of $39.9 billion for the Department of Homeland Security.

Included in this legislation is $90,000 for a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio All Hazards alert system in Jackson County. All Hazards NOAA Weather Radio (NWR) is an all-hazards public warning system that broadcasts forecasts, warnings and emergency information 24 hours a day directly to the public.

"We need this system in Jackson County," Cramer said. "I am pleased to secure funding for it. We all know what happened earlier this year, and I want the people of Jackson County to have the best notification equipment available. This alert system will provide the most technologically up-to-date system to quickly and accurately dispense weather and other emergency information to people throughout the area."

Representative Cramer has been a member of the House Appropriations Committee since 1998. It is one of four exclusive committees in the U.S. House of Representatives, and is responsible for providing funds for all areas of the federal government as well as vital programs that help meet the needs of the nation.

The Homeland Security Appropriations Bill now moves to the full House of Representatives for consideration.
