NEUGEBAUER PRAISES TODAY'S SUPREME COURT RULING TO UPHOLD THE 2ND AMENDMENT
Following the June 26th ruling by the United States Supreme Court in the case of the District of Columbia vs. Heller, Congressman Randy Neugebauer (TX-19) released the following statement:
"I am pleased the Supreme Court upheld the Second Amendment right of all Americans to keep and bear arms in a 5-4 ruling.
"This decision is the first time in U.S. history that the Supreme Court ruled Americans have a right to own firearms for personal use. Additionally, this is the first time in nearly 70 years that the highest court in America ruled that the Constitution protects an individual's right to possess a firearm, without having any ties to a state militia.
"In this case, the Supreme Court Justices followed their pledge to protect the Constitution and interpret this document, rather than inserting their political views by legislating from the bench.
"While the origin of the case was a law in the District of Columbia that restricts gun possession, the precedent set today will have a significant ripple effect in how the rights of citizens to own firearms will be dealt with in the future.
"I sincerely hope that judges and elected officials across the nation respect the ruling of the Supreme Court and do not attempt to create burdensome laws that keep law-abiding Americans from exercising the constitutional right the Supreme Court upheld on June 26th."
