Drake Votes with a Bipartisan Majority to Authorize Crucial Funding for the Chesapeake Bay

U.S. Representative Thelma Drake (R-Va.) today joined her colleagues in a bipartisan fashion to vote for the Chesapeake Bay Gateways and Watertrails Network Continuing Authorization Act (HR 5540). The Chesapeake Bay Gateways program is an important aspect of the overall Chesapeake Bay restoration effort, providing grants to improve public access, enhance public education, and foster citizen stewardship of the Bay.

"Everyday I spend in the Second District I see the beauty of the Chesapeake Bay- it is truly a historic treasure. This bill is vitally important to ensuring that the Bay is preserved and restored so that our families can enjoy it now and in the future," said Drake. "When I see my grandchildren playing in the Bay, it reminds me of how important it is for us to preserve it for their children."

Additionally, the Chesapeake Bay Gateways program provides grants that would directly benefit the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail. Drake, along with her long time friend and colleague Congresswoman Jo Ann Davis, played a pivotal role in passing legislation to make this trail a reality.

"It is a fond memory to have worked with Congresswoman Jo Ann Davis on the establishment of the Captain John Smith Trail," said Drake. "It is important for everyone to know of the history and the significance of the Chesapeake Bay."
