Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, senior member of the Florida Congressional Delegation, is proud to cosponsor legislation which authorizes federal funds for the preservation and progression of the National Tropical Botanical Garden. Ros-Lehtinen's District is home to a Botanical Garden.
This bill is worthy of support because of the profound historical value, social appreciation and cultural enrichment which the community derives from having a botanical and horticultural educational center.
There is a National Tropical Botanical Garden in Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen's District located in Coconut Grove known as "The Kampong Garden", named for the Malay or Javanese word for a village or cluster of houses.
The Kampong serves as the mainland campus for the National Tropical Botanical Garden's educational courses, as a living classroom used by universities and colleges for botany and horticulture courses, and is a popular spot for plant enthusiasts of all ages. The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Said Ros-Lehtinen, "This legislation is important because these Gardens do a superb job of not only educating the community of important horticultural issues but also preserving the plant life which is distinctive of our nation's varied regions. I urge my colleagues to support it and thus preserve them for future generations."
