Augusta, GA-As the nation prepares to commemorate Memorial Day, U.S. Congressman Paul Broun today urged Americans to take time this weekend to honor the men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice fighting for our freedom. Broun, a former jet engine mechanic in the Marines and Navy Medical Officer, will proudly observe Memorial Day in Georgia's Tenth Congressional District, taking part in celebrations in Augusta and in Athens over the extended holiday weekend.
"We, as Americans, must never forget that our freedom is not free," said Broun. "The freedom we enjoy today cost countless Americans their comfort, security, and, for many, their lives as they bravely defended the United States of America and all that we hold dear. I ask Georgians to join with me in remembering the fallen. We should also take this time to honor our faithful veterans as well as our active duty men and women who have stepped up to answer the call of duty with valor and strength."
Congressman Broun will begin his Memorial Day observances at 7:00 pm on Saturday by participating in Columbia County's Eighth Annual Red, White, and Blue Veterans Celebration in front of the courthouse in Evans. Broun will deliver remarks at the event which features patriotic music and fireworks.
Broun will also deliver the keynote address at noon on Monday at the annual Memorial Day at Memorial Park in Athens. The unveiling of the Purple Heart Monument will highlight this year's event.
