Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) made the following remarks after representatives from Israel and Syria confirmed the countries have been involved in indirect peace talks and each country intends to continue the dialogue.

"I want to commend the leaders of Israel and Syria for agreeing to engage in indirect peace talks. After the past seven years of war and increasing instability in the Middle East, perhaps these nations grew tired of waiting for the United States to play a leadership role in bringing about comprehensive peace. Both countries deserve credit for their actions, as does Turkey for agreeing to play an indispensible role in facilitating these talks. There has been a great deal of rhetoric recently about the value of dialogue, negotiations, and tough diplomacy. I believe this hopeful news from a troubled region is a sign that despite the lack of leadership from the United States, there is a real chance for a lasting peace in the Middle East. I know that around the world there are many of us who will pray for peace and hope for success in these talks."
