The veterans who have defended the freedom of our country deserve our gratitude and support.
During my service in Congress, I have consistently supported legislation to improve health services and retirement benefits for veterans. The Veterans Administration Medical Centers in Birmingham and Tuscaloosa provide outstanding care, and I am proud to support the services they provide on behalf of our veterans.
The construction of a National Veterans Cemetery in Montevallo will be very significant for Alabama's veteran population. It is only fitting that those in Alabama who have served our country with honor are afforded a final resting place near their loved ones. The site is particularly attractive because of its tie in with the American Village, historic Montevallo, and the beautiful rolling landscape of the Shoal Creek Valley. Having secured $18.5 million in the federal budget for construction of the cemetery, I look forward to its scheduled opening in late 2008.
During 2007, there have been numerous events honoring veterans and soldiers from the 6th District and Alabama. Events that I have been privileged to participate in include: A Hero's Welcome at the Lakeshore Foundation for veterans injured in Iraq and Afghanistan; the Blue Star Salute at American Village; the Silver Star ceremony for Pfc. Johnathon Millican of County Line; and a Tribute to World War II veterans at the Birmingham VA Medical Center.
The Sixth District has always shown its gratitude for the service of our veterans. Some of the events that I have had the privilege to participate in include the Birmingham Honor Flight to the World War Two Memorial in Washington; A Hero's Welcome at the Lakeshore Foundation for veterans injured in Iraq and Afghanistan; the Blue Star Salute at American Village; the Silver Star ceremony for Pfc. Johnathon Millican of County Line; and a Tribute to World War II veterans at the Birmingham VA Medical Center.
