Boehner Highlights Troops' Progress in Iraq, Calls on Democratic Leaders to Pass Clean Troop Funding Bill

Congressman John Boehner (R-West Chester) issued the following statement today on the progress of our troops in Iraq and the need to fully fund their efforts with a clean supplemental funding bill:

"Because of the heroic efforts of our troops, clear and undeniable progress on both security and political reconciliation is being made in Iraq today - improvements that lawmakers from both parties who visit Iraq have seen for themselves. The Majority can dwell on the past if they want but that won't bring our troops home any sooner, and it won't make America any safer. Our goal is to bring our troops home after success, not defeat. Only success in Afghanistan and Iraq will make the American people safer here at home."

"Rather than recycling stale talking points, and trying to bypass open and honest debate in the Appropriations Committee and the House floor, House Democrats should be working with Republicans to give our men and women in uniform all of the resources they need by passing a clean troop funding bill. The money for our troops fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq should not be held hostage as ‘leverage' for unrelated spending or to force a dangerous, precipitous withdrawal from Iraq. And the Majority shouldn't waste valuable time in pursuing a cynical veto strategy they know will fail. It's time to stop playing politics with our troops."

Boehner represents Ohio's 8th District, which includes all of Darke, Miami and Preble counties, most of Butler and Mercer counties, and the northeastern corner of Montgomery County. He was first elected to Congress in 1990.
