Issue Position: Fair Trade

Free trade - by creating jobs and opening international markets - is important to the strength of the American economy. But to realize its benefits and truly level the playing field for competition between American and foreign workers, our free trade agreements must be fair. This includes protecting American jobs and providing aid to workers displaced as a result of our trade agreements. In addition, free and fair trade means making sure our trading partners provide their workers with real labor rights. Without an obligation to enforce international labor standards, foreign workers are exposed to abuse and exploitation, and American workers are forced to compete at an unfair disadvantage. Trade that is both free and fair generates competition for businesses in the United States, while at the same time protecting American jobs and upholding real labor rights for workers abroad.
