Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today regarding an announcement yesterday by the Departments of Veterans Affairs and Housing and Urban Development that $75 million would be allocated to provide housing for an estimated 10,000 homeless veterans nationwide. The HUD-VASH program serves homeless and disabled veterans, providing permanent housing and ongoing treatment services to chronically homeless veterans suffering from mental illness, substance abuse disorders and other severe disabilities. Under the allocation announced yesterday, San Francisco will receive approximately $1.5 million in vouchers.
"As a nation and as a community, we make a simple and sacred promise to our veterans: you have taken care of us, we will take care of you. How we repay their sacrifice speaks volumes about our national character. As a nation, we have a moral obligation to provide the benefits and services that our veterans have earned through their honorable service to our nation."
"The New Direction Congress pledges to ensure that our veterans have the quality transition services they have earned and that they deserve. On the battlefield, the military pledges to leave no one behind. As San Franciscans and as a nation, let it be our pledge that when they return home, we leave no veteran behind. As we continue our efforts to deliver on our federal commitments to veterans, ending veteran homelessness must remain a critical goal."
