Chaffetz Opposes Senate Immigration Proposal

Press Release

Date: May 18, 2007
Issues: Immigration

I fundamentally oppose the proposals outlined in the Senate's compromise immigration reform bill.

Once again Washington D.C. politicians have proven they are out of touch with core American values. The Senate proposal does not solve the immigration problem - it perpetuates it.

I am in favor of legal immigration, but any approach that rewards and incentivizes illegal activity will not solve the underlying problem.

Congress is brokering an amnesty deal on illegal immigration to avoid going home to constituents empty-handed. This is not leadership — it's an insult to every American citizen who sustains the rule of law. At what point do we finally say enough is enough and demand that our elected officials actually stand up for our core principles? At what point do we stop devaluing what it means to be an American?

What America needs is consistent enforcement of our laws. We need to eliminate the rewards and incentives to those who have come here illegally. Border security is critical, and I do not believe we need to use it as cover for passing other provisions which conflict with our core principles.

Personal responsibility and respect for the rule of law are core American values that should be reflected in our policies. It's time our representatives get a backbone and do the right thing instead of caving in to what they perceive to be the most politically expedient option.
