Issue Position: Energy - Alternative Fuels

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2011

In order to lessen our dependence on foreign oil, the United States must be ingenious, inventive, and resourceful in the development of alternative fuels. Senator Rockefeller believes clean coal can be our country's greatest chance to achieve energy independence, but knows we must be open to other ideas and sources of alternative energy.

Senator Rockefeller has a longstanding dedication to increasing the use of alternative fuels for transportation. He believes they are critical to lowering our dependence on imported oil, improving the quality of the air we breathe, and reducing the greenhouse gases our nation emits. Senator Rockefeller has been a long-time supporter of research into, incentives for, and commercial implementation of alternative fuel technologies. He has repeatedly introduced legislation to increase production of alternatively fueled vehicles and help the industry gain a sustainable and affordable foothold in the marketplace.

Senator Rockefeller knows that when our national policy supports the creative energies and potential of the private sector, progress is made at a faster rate. Looking forward, Senator Rockefeller is trying to help the United States achieve a greater degree of energy independence by supporting the use of domestic biofuels and clean coal-to-transportation fuel conversion.
