Senator Rockefeller has led the charge to promote adoptions and improve services to children at risk of abuse and neglect. Rockefeller successfully fought for child abuse prevention programs that were later expanded to include adoption and reunification services as part of the Adoption and Safe Families Act. Since the passage of that act, the number of adoptions from foster care has doubled nationwide, including more than 900 adoptions from foster care in West Virginia.
Rockefeller is also the sponsor of successful legislation that helps to provide timelier placement of foster children across state lines. And, he is the author of the We Care Kids Act, which provides grants to strengthen the ability of court systems to monitor abused and neglected children.
Senator Rockefeller has also been a leader in efforts to dramatically improve the child support enforcement program, which serves more than 17 million children and promotes parental responsibility.
