Senator Roberts Observes Tax Freedom Day

In observance of Tax Freedom Day, U.S. Senator Pat Roberts today called on the Congress to allow American taxpayers to keep more of the dollars they earn.

"Today is the day all Americans are finally working for themselves," Senator Roberts said. "They have paid off what they owe to their local, state and federal governments. Tax Freedom day really illustrates the value of tax relief to the family budget. I urge my colleagues in the House and Senate to make tax relief for families, farmers and ranchers, small business owners and individuals a priority."

Senator Roberts, a member of the Senate Finance Committee is working reduce the tax burden of the Alternative Minimum Tax, or AMT, that impacts middle-income taxpayers, and he supports preserving the current tax relief that has lowered income tax rates across the board, doubled the child tax credit, lowered the rates on capital gains and dividends, and provided marriage penalty relief. If this tax relief is allowed to expire in 2010, families will pay an average of $2,300 in higher taxes, and Americans will face a collective tax hike of more than $1.2 trillion over the next 10 years, the biggest tax increase in history.
