Vitter Statement on Papal Visit

U.S. Sen. David Vitter today issued the following statement regarding the visit of Pope Benedict XVI to the United States.

"This week, Wendy and I joined thousands of Americans in welcoming Pope Benedict XVI on his first official visit to the United States as head of the Catholic Church.

"Today, at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., more than 40,000 people attended a mass given by Pope Benedict. We were thrilled to have the opportunity to be there to pray with the Holy Father, as we were blessed to be at the White House arrival ceremony yesterday. The visit reminds us of John Paul the Great's visit to Louisiana when we were young adults," Vitter said.

With regard to Pope Benedict's visit, Vitter remarked: "I am especially grateful for the Pope's words of solidarity and encouragement regarding Louisiana's suffering from the 2005 hurricanes."
