Vitter Comments on Petraeus's Appearance before Congress
U.S. Sen. David Vitter today issued the following statement regarding General David Petraeus's appearance before the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.
"I look forward to hearing General David Petraeus, our top commander in Iraq, testifying today before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee about the path forward in Iraq. The surge that began last year has clearly worked and has dramatically improved the situation in Iraq, but the recent insurgent offensive is certainly a cause for concern.
"How we react to this new offensive is critical. I believe that we must show our resolve, instead of allowing these insurgents to dictate our policy - as some on the left would like to see us do - and push us into a precipitous withdrawal from the region. General Petraeus's appearance today frames an important debate that will help shape the future of Iraq, and will impact to what extent American service members will play a role.
"I think it is clear that the surge has worked overall, but that doesn't mean that the situation in Iraq is easy. Having personally visited Iraq - and Afghanistan - I have gained a better insight into the difficulties and dangers that our men and women in uniform face. There are clear signs of progress in Iraq, however, and I hope that we are able to illustrate that effectively to those who would rather see us simply pack up and leave," said Vitter.
