Common Sense On: Applying to be an Americorps NCCC Member

What is AmeriCorps NCCC?

The AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) is a team-based, full-time community service program designed for young adults. NCCC members are organized into teams of 10-12 people and are based at one of five campuses across the country, including a new campus in Vinton, Iowa. From these campuses, members travel to different communities to serve otherwise unmet local needs. The specific projects vary but in the past they have included working with Habitat for Humanity to build homes for low-income families, cleaning up waterways, constructing playgrounds, mentoring students and responding to disasters.

Who can apply?

Community minded Iowans between the ages of 18 and 24 are encouraged to apply.

Why apply now?

While AmeriCorps NCCC is not a new program, this June a brand new campus will be opening up right here in Iowa. The new facility is a terrific opportunity for service oriented young leaders to gain useful life skills and to serve their community, state, and nation. The Vinton campus has also pledged that at least 25 percent of its first class will be Iowa natives.

What positions can I apply for?

There are two different positions available with the NCCC, the member position and the team leader position. Both are involved in all the different service projects, but team leaders are also responsible for managing a group of 10-12 members.

What are the benefits of being a member of the NCCC?

Not only will you be helping others and your local communities, you will also receive many personal benefits. You successfully complete your ten months of work you will receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of up to $4,725 to pay for college, graduate school or to pay back qualified student loans. It's a great entry into the college or job world. Members gain important life skills and are trained in CPR, first aid, disaster response and firefighting. During your service period you will receive housing, a living allowance, health coverage, and student loan deferment.

How do I apply?

To apply, simply visit the NCCC website at www.americorps.gov/nccc. The application deadline has been extended until May 15 so I encourage all interested individuals to act quickly and apply to be a part of this exciting new opportunity.
