BIDEN on Earth Day: Only the United States Can Lead the Way on Climate Change

Delaware Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr. issued the following statement today in observance of Earth Day:

"Nearly 40 years ago when we first celebrated Earth Day, the issues were largely domestic and our concerns were local; pollution in our rivers, air quality in the cities where we lived. Today, we honor Earth Day amid the growing challenges of climate change, wrapping a world of local issues into the first truly global environmental problem.

"Only the United States, as the engine of the global economy and largest historical source of greenhouse gas emissions, can lead the way. We must slow, stop, and reverse our own emissions as well as restore American leadership in international climate talks. By eliminating waste and promoting new technologies, the transition to a clean economy will make us all better off.

"Without us, the rest of the world cannot stop global warming. Without the rest of the world, our efforts will be wasted. We owe that to ourselves, to our fellow nations, and most importantly, to future generations."
