Statement of U.S. Senator Russ Feingold on Earth Day 2008
"Thirty-eight years ago today, the great Wisconsin Senator and environmentalist Gaylord Nelson founded Earth Day to encourage people across the country and around the world to celebrate our environment and protect our natural resources. Today we celebrate Senator Nelson's legacy, and renew our own dedication to the environment.
"Much has been accomplished since Senator Nelson began his groundbreaking work to protect our environment, but there is still much to be done. We must carefully guard the Great Lakes, an unparalleled natural resource, from threats like invasive species, pollution, and falling water levels. We also need to address global climate change, and defend existing laws protecting the rivers, lakes, and wetlands that provide us with clean drinking water and recreational opportunities in Wisconsin and across the country. Wisconsinites will build on Gaylord Nelson's legacy by continuing our leadership to protect our environment and the resources we all depend on."
