Chandler Votes for Historic Energy Legislation

Congressman Ben Chandler joined his colleagues in the House of Representatives today to pass a bill that increases America's energy independence, lowers energy costs for families, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and helps strengthen the economy. This landmark legislation was passed by a vote of 314-100 and is expected to be signed into law by the President later this week.

"In recent years, our country has increased its dependency on oil, while the big oil companies continue to report record profits," said Congressman Chandler. "I'm proud to finally see our government taking steps to promote alternative forms of energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and grow the U.S. economy."

The Energy Independence and Security Act will increase vehicle fuel efficiency standards for the first time in 32 years—to 35 miles per gallon by 2020—and will decrease U.S. oil consumption by more than 4 million barrels per day by 2030. In addition to greatly reducing greenhouse gas emissions, these new fuel economy standards will save American families $700 to $1,000 at the pump per year.

"Since 2001, gas prices have more than doubled in Kentucky. It is obvious that we need alternative energy options for fueling our vehicles, homes and businesses," said Chandler. "Fortunately, this bill will provide many of the resources and incentives we need to further lessen our dependence on foreign oil and become more energy independent in the 21st century."

The legislation also increases the efficiency of buildings, homes, appliances and lighting and expands the use of American-grown biofuels to 36 billion gallons by 2022. The development of these biofuels, coupled with cutting-edge energy research, is predicted to create hundreds of thousands of new jobs nationwide.
