On House Floor, Bono Mack Urges Support for Protecting Environmental Treasures
Today Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (CA-45) praised House passage of the National Landscape Conservation Act, H.R. 2016, which would protect some of the nation's most valuable and ecologically significant lands, including the Santa Rosa San Jacinto Mountains National Monument. Bono Mack, co-chair of the National Landscape Conservation System (NLCS) Caucus, joined several of her colleagues in introducing this legislation in April of 2007. The bill passed by a bipartisan vote of 278-140.
"Passing this bill is a positive step toward ensuring the protection of some our nation's most unique and valuable lands," said Bono Mack. "As a co-chair of the NLCS Caucus, I am pleased that this legislation was crafted in a bipartisan way by Members who are fortunate to have NLCS lands in their districts. These valuable and culturally significant lands deserve the oversight and permanence that comes with Congressional recognition. I am proud that the National Landscape Conservation Act will include the Santa Rosa San Jacinto Mountains National Monument as a part of this protected system."
William Meadows, President of The Wilderness Society, said, "We are exceptionally pleased that the House voted to recognize the importance of 26 million acres of our nation's most scenic western landscapes by passing this bill. The 75-member alliance supporting this legislation commends Rep. Mary Bono Mack for helping lead the bi-partisan effort that brings permanent protection to these deserving lands."
Bono Mack introduced legislation that created the Santa Rosa San Jacinto Mountains National Monument in 2000. Speaking today on the House floor about the process of crafting this significant legislation and urging her colleagues to vote in favor of the NLCS bill, Bono Mack said:
"[The effort to establish the Santa Rosa San Jacinto Mountains National Monument] was a direct result of the desire to have the public - the people of California's 45th District - get involved in the creation of a large federal land designation.
"The result is an impressive example of federal lands that are to this day managed in their own unique manner. It is for this reason that I continue to support H.R. 2016. From hunting and fishing to off-road vehicle recreating, these impressive lands across our country will continue to have the specific uses they were afforded under the laws that created them."
The NLCS bill is broadly supported by groups such as the Wilderness Society, the Nature Conservancy, Ducks Unlimited, and the Boone & Crockett Club.
