Issue Position: Immigration
With over 12 million illegal immigrants already residing within the United States, and an additional 500,000 crossing our borders each year, it's clear that our current immigration system is broken and that the status quo is unacceptable. America is a nation founded by immigrants, but it's also a nation founded upon the rule of law, and Claire believes it is imperative that we respect both of these traditions.
Claire supports legal immigration. However, she opposes measures that reward illegal immigrants for their unlawful behavior. That includes granting illegal immigrants amnesty or allowing illegal immigrants to receive federal assistance. Claire also opposes giving driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.
Claire also believes that if the Administration enforced current law on employers who hire undocumented workers, that would go a long way stop the flow of illegal immigration. The promise of employment and government benefits serves as a magnet that attracts illegal workers across our border. Claire believes that if U.S. employers were unwilling to hire illegal immigrants for fear that the employers themselves would have to serve jail time, then immigrants would be less likely to risk illegally crossing our borders. Any effort at immigration reform should include stronger employer sanctions and that such sanctions should be aggressively enforced.
