David Orentlicher Joins Local Veteran Adam Wachter to Discuss His Plan for Iraq

Press Release

Date: March 19, 2008
Location: Indianapolis, IN

David Orentlicher took the occasion of the Fifth Anniversary of the beginning of the Iraq War to call for both the war's end and improved services for returning veterans.

"After five years, we have lost the lives of almost 4,000 American servicemen and women, including more than 100 Hoosiers and 4 heroes from the 7th Congressional District. We have also gone into unprecedented national debt to pay more than $400 billion for this misguided war effort. This war should never have happened. We have created a terrible mess at a terrible cost, and enough is enough. It is time to bring real moral leadership back to Washington so we can begin to bring home our troops," Orentlicher said.

Orentlicher discussed his agreement with the Responsible Plan To End The War in Iraq proposal put forth by a number of Congressional candidates this week. "It is past time that we begin our exit from Iraq. This plan goes a long way toward ensuring a safe stable and self-governing Iraq," Orentlicher said.

The proposal discusses such issues as:

· Ending military action and transitioning control and responsibility for Iraq to the Iraqis;

· Committing to human rights (addressing the refugee crisis, protecting the rights of women and minorities, ending the practice of torture);

· Eliminating the use of signing statements; and

· Ending warrantless spying on U.S. citizens.

He also called for improvements in our treatment of veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. "Our troops have served us heroically, but too many of them are coming home with devastating physical and psychological injuries. We need to take care of our veterans just as they took care of us. We need to ensure that all our veterans receive the medical, psychological, educational, and job support they deserve when they come back home."
